Art/Technical Direction, Lighting, Composition and Post

These are some renderings of unit tour interiors I worked on at Focus360. I was brought on to the project to revisit the approach to lighting, rendering settings, composition and animation. The goal was to achieve a look for the product that was not only more “photo real” but showed each room in their best lighting scenario. I started with a typical unit consisting of the usual rooms; living, dining, kitchen, breakfast nook, master bedroom and master bath and populated them with furniture schemes that were provided for me. Then I setup animation and still cameras and created a lighting rig and render settings that could be duplicated in any interior. I also used combustion to create a composite setup that would automatically use various vray elements to achieve a consistent look.

Once the first Unit Tour was done, Scott Schroeder was able to recreate a consistent look across multiple units using the lighting rig, render presets and combustion space. I was really happy with the result.

Lighting and Post

Here are some early versions of some stills I worked on at Focus360 for a project called Hawadi. The modeling, materials and composition for the fountain shots was done by Chris Moran. The modeling, materials and composition for the aerial view was done by Austin Hernandez. I was the lighting lead for the project and was only responsible for the lighting and post. This was a large project consisting of an animation and 30 exterior renderings. I’m sure I’ll talk about the animation in a future entry.

Creation of interior prop studios

Here are some renderings of two prop studios I created at Focus360 in January 2009. The purpose of these studios was to assess the quality of the modeling and materials of props to be used in a “photo real” interior rendering or animation and most importantly to refine the materials to react correctly in a physically accurate lit environment. I created both day and night time versions. I think its really important to create materials that work for multiple camera angles and lighting conditions rather then always cheating materials per shot.

I was exploring some back lit materials and ended up creating this rendering featuring these star lanterns I designed. I used vray 2 sided materials to achieve this look in render. This ones me start to finish.

Project Direction, Art Direction, Materials, Lighting, Composition and Post

Here are some conceptual renderings I did at Softmirage. Alan Grant was the client and was very fun to work with. He was also the Architect and collaborating with him and his team to create these renderings was really cool. I’m sure they have moved forward with the design since then, since these were done a while back.

Project Direction, Art Direction, Materials, Lighting, Composition and Post

Here is a rendering I created at Softmirage in 2008 for the M Resort. I was responsible for both Project Direction and Art Direction. I met with the designers in Las Vegas several times to receive design criteria and review our progress. I also managed and directed the efforts of the staff of modelers and senior artists. The project consisted of approximately 20 renderings and a 3 minute animation showcasing the new resort.  I executed the lighting, materials and post on this image. This rendering was featured on several billboards visible from the freeway. The M Resort is now complete and looks beautiful!!! Top Chef Season 6 was filmed there and it’s really cool to see it in the background when I watch!!!

Project Direction, Art Direction, Materials, Lighting, Composition and Post

Here are some renderings I did a few years ago at Softmirage. This project is actually built now and is visible from the 210 freeway in Glendale CA. I went through multiple iterations of these renderings and several others during the design process. I executed the composition, lighting, materials and post on these images. These were my favorite images from that project.

These renderings of a private residence were completed in June 2007 at Softmirage. I was responsible for project direction, art direction, lighting, materials and post. I directed a team of modelers to the completion of these images. They had alot of fun placing all of that 3d landscape. These images were rendered with 3D Studio Max and Vray. Thank you vray-proxies!!

Project Direction, Art Direction, Materials, Lighting, Composition and Post

This high resolution rendering of the master planned community of Ghaziabad, India was completed a few years back at Softmirage. I worked with the team at JZMK Partners to art direct a series of renderings and an animation of this enormous master planned community. I have to thank the owners, Steve Pollack and Urs Britschgi for giving me so many opportunities to work on large scale development projects back at Softmirage. This one was very laborious because we didn’t have much design information and had to work back and forth with JZMK partners in designing all of the high rise buildings. I directed several senior artists and modelers to the projects completion. Austin Hernandez and Gabe Askew were key players in co-managing the staff and taking the brunt of the 3d work. All of the landscape and buildings in this image are vray-proxies. It was rendered in one pass in 3dsmax and of course Vray. I was responsible for lighting and art direction on this image.

Art Direction, Materials, Lighting, Composition and Post

These renderings of a model interior at EVO tower in Los Angeles were completed in September 2006 at Softmirage. I was responsible for art direction, lighting, materials and post. EVO tower is now built and is a stones throw from the Staples Center. We created several exterior renderings as well, one of which was featured in a print add in DWELL magazine, but these interiors were my favorite.
